It is difficult for those away from home, in hard times.
The loneliness, the fear, the uncertainty
Can consume you, overwhelm you, eat away at you.
But it must be said, that it is not much better for those
Left behind.
There is not even the press of present circumstances to
Distract, occupy, or consume.
There is simply an empty place at the table,
In the bed,
In your heart,
That nothing can properly fill.
So don't ask me which I would prefer,
To be the one leaving or the one left behind.
It is not a choice anyone willingly makes.
