Older Brothers

My oldest brother and I were talking on the phone last night. He told me I am a good teacher, and he told me why. Considering he is a university professor, I was impressed by what he said.

I do care about my students. I do try to connect with them. I try to make their learning relevant. Maybe I fail more often than not, but I try, and I have moments when I succeed. Those are the moments I live for as a teacher, the moments you see the change you are trying to make in a life.

I am not a great teacher, and I never will be. There will be no movies telling about the amazing difference I made in the lives of my students, no accolades from colleagues, administrators, organizations or officials in the government. But every now and again, a former student will re-appear, reminding me that I have made a difference in one person's life. That is accolade enough.
