Then, the afternoon came along. It was quieter, and we were having a great discussion about rising gas prices. I know I know, you are wondering, "How can that be a great discussion," but kids are incredible to watch when lights are coming on in their brains. The thing is, as with any subject, you are not going to engage all the students. It is just how it works in a classroom with 30 kids.
Apparently I had one student whose attention was, how shall we say, wandering. She was sitting quietly in her desk, which is what I ask of the students if they are not going to work or participate. It was not until I told them to go line up for recess that I realized exactly WHAT she had been up to. She did not get out of her desk. She sat there, along with two of her friends. As I was cleaning up my work and waiting for them, one of her friends came over and asked me for some of my hand cleaner (I keep this stuff around so they clean their hands before touching my Macs). I started to give some to her, then she tells me the other two girls need it too. I stopped, then told her, "They can come and get some if they need it." She took some, and one of the other two took some, then I moved to the door.
I was trying to hurry them up, since the rest of the class was waiting in the hall and that is a recipe for disaster after a minute or so, when the first girl says in a plaintive voice, "Ms. B, S*******'s finger is stuck in her desk."
Huh? I walked over, expecting her finger to be pinched in her desk, but I was, of course, WRONG. Oh boy, was I wrong.

Epilogue - Idiot Teen had to be cut OUT of her desk. First the princ and maintenence man cut a chunk of the desk free, then she had to be taken to the ER where a doctor had to remove the rest.
Idiots. All of them. Freaking idiots.
