The idea of The Void came from a David Gemmell novel I read, "The Legend of Deathwalker". Below is an excerpt of something I wrote while thinking on the idea of what possibly lies beyond.

~Excerpt~

My morning started off in a less-than-pleasant manner, and after I worked out I decided to read my book rather than go into work at 7:30. What better way to cheer myself than an hour spent with The Deathwalker, right? The sun was shining, the day looking promising, and as I fell into the story - as I always seem to do - my mood lifted.

Then, a thought.

What if what is beyond this life is a Void, such as the one Druss walked in to help two spirits reunite? I started thinking on that as I read, for as the battle approached, death was a prominent thought for many of the characters, and a looming reality for a lot of them, such being the nature of the story. I began to wonder, if there is a Void, and we must cross it, is it all right to wait for true friends before we begin? It seemed to be an acceptable thing for the characters in the novel to do.

What truly interested me was the idea that, if I do have to cross The Void, and I AM allowed to walk with people, who would I want to walk with me? It is not physical strength that saves us there (my imagination is wonderful this way), for it is not a physical realm. So, what qualities matter? Heart, courage, bravery even unto death, compassion, and honour. Intelligence, intuition, and a sense of humour (on the dark side at times, considering the locale) as well. True friends are needed, for they have to choose to walk with you, don't they?

THEN ....... I started thinking who in my world has those qualities. I was running down the short list, for there are few people I want to spend THAT much time with - hell, there are few people I want to spend a day with - and I was somewhat saddened by the reality that many people I know do not have qualities I want to take into The Void with me.

There was one name that I know I would be willing to have
top the list .... I was impressed and gladdened by that realization ....

I was almost late for work, for I sat lost in thought for an awfully long time before that realization struck me. I think, if we even have one person in our world who would walk The Void with us, we are lucky. Luckier still if there are more than one.
